Prisoners of Freedom
2000, 91 Minutes, Color
This dramatized documentary explores a little-known historical
episode during World War II: The Creation of a camp for 1000 European refugees
at Oswego, NY. Blending voice-over narrations, archival photographs of the
camp and its inhabitants, actual interviews with camp residents, and recreated
dramatic events, the film brings to life the complex, often contradictory
feelings of these refugees who remain trapped in a hazy gray realm between
liberation and imprisonment. In so doing, it presents a fascinating portrait
of people struggling with the psychological and spiritual nuances of freedom
from a uniquely personal and historical perspective. Virtually unknown today,
this dynamic story represents a significant chapter in American history, a
vital chapter in New York State life, and a crucial part of the American-Jewish
tradition.
