Thomas Szasz and the
Myth of Mental Illness
a film by Owen Shapiro, written by Lester Friedman
1989, 56 Minutes
Thomas Szasz and the Myth of Mental Illness explores the
biography and examines the philosophy of controversial psychiatrist Thomas
Szasz, paying particular attention to the legal implications and social consequences
of his theories. Centering around a spirited debate between Szasz and Dr.
Herbert Pardes (then President of the American Psychiatric Association) over
a dramatic, fictionalized case history, the film also incorporates
provocative questioning by such luminaries as William F. Buckley Jr. (edititor:
National Review), Alan Dershowitz (Harvard Law School), and Karen DeCrow (past
President, National Organization of Women).
“…This documentary represents a completely
new approach. It deals with questions never answered. It’s a masterpiece
for its structure and its consequent emotional impact….Creative and
informative, provocative and sensitive, this is a must see for anyone interested
in the formation of our cultural values.”
Arnost Lustig
Thomas Szasz and the Myth of Mental Illness is in the collection of more than
250 world libraries, universities, and mental health institutions.
